ドアノブ２
昨年（２０２５年）の１２月に東京、赤坂の個室のサウナ風呂で火災が起こり、男女２名が焼死した。男が外へ逃げようとしてドアノブを掴んだ（？）ところ、ドアの取っ手が外れた。ストッパーが付いているドアは開けない。男女は焼死体で見つかった。この事件で、昨年の我が家でも、ドアノブの故障があったことを思い出した。私は、当時その対策を万全にして、その後の不安は解消した。その対策などを昨年、この雑記に記したので、そのコピーを下記に載せた。参考にしてください。

ドアノブ
我が家の建物は、２３年前建てたものである。これは総２階建てで、ドア、襖（フスマ）などで仕切られた部屋は、物置、トイレなどを含めて１７ヶ所ある。部屋に取手（ドアノブ）の付いたドアは１１ヶ所ある。この取手付のドアは、閉めたとき、ストッパーがはたらき、閉まるようになっている。ドアを開けるときは、取手を下げると、ストッパーが解除してドアが開く。
我が家には、トイレのように出入口が１ヶ所しかない部屋のドアは、全部で８ヶ所ある。このドアが破損して開かなくなった場合、中に入っている人は閉じ込められてしまうことになる。家に本人以外に誰もいない場合は、大変なことになるであろう。我が家では、このドアノブの破損は過去２回あった。１回目は３年前、１階のトイレのドアノブが破損した。私がドアを開けた時、ドアノブが折れてしまった。幸いトイレを出た時に破損したので、トイレに閉じ込められることはなかった。私は立っている時、体のふらつきを予防するため、時折ドアノブにつかんで、自分の体重をドアノブにかけることがある。その時にドアノブが折れたのであろう。このドアノブを修理するため、ネットでドアノブを調べると、サイズが同じものがあったので、それを注文して無事取り付けることができた。ドアノブの価格は約４０００円であった。
２回目のドアノブ破損は昨年の１０月頃であった。台所の出入り口のドアノブが抜けてしまった。ストッパーが働いたまま抜けたので、開閉ができなくなってしまった。この台所のドアは、別の部屋から回って、ドアの反対側に行くことができる。私は、ドライバーを使って、反対側のドアノブを分解して、ストッパーを解除することができた。このドアノブを外して、新しいドアノブをネットで注文して、取り付けることができた。
この２個のドアノブ破損は、幸い部屋に閉じ込められていない状態であったので、幸運であった。私は、頑丈そうなこのようなドアノブが破損するとは、全く思っていなかった。トイレでこのような破損が起きたら、私は大声を出して、助けを呼ばなくてはならない。妻が庭などに出て、近くにいなければ、長時間トイレ詰めになる。妻が近くにいても、妻はドライバーでドアノブを分解できるとは思えない。町内の建具屋などに電話して、来てもらわなければならないが、妻は、建具屋の電話番号を調べることからやらなければならない。手っ取り早く１１０番に連絡することになるが、これでは近所の人は、「雪隠詰め（せっちんずめ）」だと言って、笑うであろう。
「二度あることは三度ある」ということで、私は、個室に付いているドアノブをストッパーが効かないようにして、三度目の破損があっても、部屋に閉じ込められないようにした。ドアノブのストッパーが入る穴には、上下にねじ止めされた穴の付いた金具が、柱に取り付けられている。この穴を塞げばストッパーは利かなくなる。塞ぐ方法は、トタン板を金具のサイズに切って、金具の上にかぶせ、上下にねじ止めする。この方法で、トイレ、個室のドア、７ヶ所を実施した。
その後、よく考えると、バスルームにもドアノブ付きのドアがあることが分かった。ここでドアノブの破損で締め切られると、バスルームには細長い窓はあるが、人の出入りはできない。ここもストッパーが効かないようにした。これで我が家は、ドアノブ破損による災難は皆無になるであろう。

Doorknob 2
Last December (2025), a fire broke out in a private sauna in Akasaka, Tokyo, resulting in the deaths of two men and women. The man grabbed the doorknob while trying to escape, but the handle came off. Doors with stoppers cannot be opened. The bodies of the man and woman were found burned to death. This incident reminded me of a malfunctioning doorknob in my home last year. I took thorough precautions at the time, and my subsequent worries were resolved. I wrote about the measures I took in this blog last year, and I've included a copy below. Please refer to it.

Doorknob
My house was built 23 years ago. It is a two-story building with 17 rooms separated by doors and sliding screens, including storage areas and toilets. Eleven doors with handles (doorknobs) are located in the rooms. When these doors with handles are closed, a stopper activates to close them. To open the door, pull down the handle, which releases the stopper and allows the door to open.
In my house, there are eight doors to rooms with only one entrance, such as the bathroom. If one of these doors breaks and cannot be opened, anyone inside will be trapped. This can be disastrous if no one else is home. Doorknobs have broken twice in my house. The first time was three years ago, when the doorknob on the first-floor bathroom broke. It broke when I opened the door. Fortunately, it broke when I left the bathroom, so I wasn't trapped inside. When I'm standing, I sometimes grab onto the doorknob and lean my weight against it to prevent myself from staggering. This is likely when the doorknob broke. To repair this doorknob, I looked online and found one the same size, so I ordered it and successfully installed it. The doorknob cost about 4,000 yen.
The second doorknob breakage occurred around October of last year. The kitchen doorknob came loose. The stopper was still engaged, so the door could no longer be opened or closed. This kitchen door can be accessed from another room by turning around. I used a screwdriver to disassemble the doorknob on the other side and was able to release the stopper. I removed the doorknob, ordered a new one online, and was able to install it.
Fortunately, the two doorknobs were broken, as we were not trapped inside the room. I never thought that such sturdy-looking doorknobs would break. If something like this had happened in the toilet, I would have to call out for help. If my wife had gone out into the garden or somewhere else and was not nearby, I would have been stuck in the toilet for a long time. Even if she had been nearby, I don't think she would be able to disassemble the doorknobs with a screwdriver. I would have to call a local joiner or similar and have them come, but my wife would have to start by looking up the joiner's phone number. The quickest way would be to call 110, but the neighbors would probably laugh at me and call me a "settchinzume" (a hidden door).
As the saying goes, "Once happens, twice happens, three times happens," so I made the doorknob on my private room door handle ineffective so that even if it breaks a third time, I won't be locked in my room. The hole where the doorknob's stopper fits is fitted with a metal piece with holes that are screwed in at the top and bottom, attached to the pillar. If we block this hole, the stopper will no longer work. To block it, cut a piece of galvanized iron to the size of the metal piece, place it over the metal piece, and screw it in at the top and bottom. I used this method in seven places, including the toilet and private room doors.
After thinking about it, I realized that there was also a door with a doorknob in the bathroom. If the doorknob broke and it closed, no one could get in or out, even though there was a long, narrow window in the bathroom. I made sure that the stopper there also didn't work. Now, our house will never have to deal with a disaster caused by a broken doorknob.
