朝顔
夏の花といえば朝顔であろう。我が家では毎年、袋入りの種をスーパーで買ってきて、春の終わりごろにまいている。今年は種から４本の芽が出て、それらを４箇所に移植した。袋入りの朝顔の種は、複数の花の色が入っており、大きくなって花が咲くまで、何色が咲くか分からない。今年は、７月の終わりころから花を付けだして、白、ピンク、赤の３種類の花が咲いた。
最初に咲いたのは白の朝顔で、これはサンルームのすぐ前に植えてある。高さ２ｍぐらいに伸ばして、裏側の見えないつるは切っている。朝起きて最初に目に入るのは、この白い朝顔である。この朝顔は成長が早く花の数も多い。白の次は白から１ｍ奥に植えたピンクの朝顔である。最初は２、３個の花しか咲かなかったが、次第に多くなり、５、６個の花が同時に咲くようになった。白に比べると、このピンクの朝顔はにぎやかである。次いでしばらくして咲いたのが、ピンクの３ｍ奥に植えた、赤の朝顔である。この朝顔は、白やピンクに比べ成長が遅く、高さ１ｍ弱にしかつるが伸びない。
４本目の朝顔は赤色である。これは、敷地の北側の道路に面したコンクリート面にブロックで囲んだ所に植えてある。ここはハイビスカスを数年前から植えている所で、その近くにこの朝顔を移植した。下がコンクリートなので、大きな鉢に植えた感じで、この朝顔は、大きなハイビスカスの陰に隠れているので、育ちは悪かった。８月の終わりにやっと花が咲き始めた。
夏の花で欠かせないのが、ひまわりであろう。我が家でも５、６年前から、ひまわりは、種から植えて、大きくした。芽が出て少し大きくなったところで、移植して横に６本ぐらい並べた。普通のひまわりであるから、背の高さは１５０ｃｍぐらいに成長し、大きな花を１個咲かせる。これらのひまわりが６個並ぶので、にぎやかである。
花が終わり、葉も枯れ始めると、私は根から引き抜いて処分する。ひまわりの茎は、花が大きい分、茎の太さも径が３ｃｍぐらいある。この茎は硬いので簡単に切断できない。切断した茎も枯れて腐葉土化しない。このひまわりは、このことから今年から小さいひまわりに変えた。
この「小さいひまわり」の苗が花屋に売っていたので、それを２個買って庭に植えた。６月の終わりころから小さい花が咲き始め、根元から茎が多く出始め、それらに花が咲く。全部で２０～３０個の花が咲くので、にぎやかである。高さが５０ｃｍ以下だから邪魔にならない。９月に入って新しく咲く花は少なくなった。
我が家の庭には、「ミニひまわり」が３箇所に根付いている。これらが７月の初めから咲き始め、９月まで咲き続けている。１株のミニひまわりは、５～１０本の茎が出て、花をそれぞれ数個以上咲かせる。黄色の花であるから、庭の中ではよく目立つ。このミニひまわりは苗を買って植えたのではない。どこからか種が飛んできて、我が家の庭で発芽したのであろう。ネットで調べると、上に述べた「小さいひまわり」は「ミニひまわり」と言い、ここで述べた「ミニひまわり」は「ひまわり小夏」と言うのかもしれない。

Morning Glory
When you think of summer flowers, you think of morning glories. Every year, we buy packets of seeds from the supermarket and plant them in late spring. This year, four seeds sprouted, which we transplanted into four locations. The packets of morning glory seeds contain multiple flower colors, so Ｉ don't know what color they'll bloom until they grow and bloom. This year, they began blooming around the end of July, producing three different colors: white, pink, and red.
The first to bloom was a white morning glory, planted just in front of the sunroom. It has grown to a height of about 2m, and the vines on the underside that cannot be seen have been cut off. This white morning glory is the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning. This morning glory grows quickly and produces many flowers. Next to the white one was a pink morning glory, planted 1m behind the white one. At first, only 2 or 3 flowers bloomed, but the number gradually increased, and 5 or 6 flowers bloomed at the same time. Compared to the white one, this pink morning glory is more lively. The next to bloom a while later was a red morning glory, planted 3m behind the pink one. This morning glory grows slower than the white and pink ones, and its vines only grow to a height of just under 1m.
The fourth morning glory is red. It's planted in a block-enclosed area on the concrete surface facing the road on the north side of the property. A hibiscus has been planted here for several years, and this morning glory was transplanted nearby. Because the concrete floor is so thick, it feels like it's planted in a large pot. This morning glory was obscured by the larger hibiscus, so it didn't grow well. It finally began to bloom at the end of August.
Sunflowers are an essential summer flower. At our house, we've been planting sunflowers from seed for the past five or six years, and growing them. Once they sprouted and grew a little, we transplanted them, lining up about six of them side by side. Since they're normal sunflowers, they grow to about 150 cm in height and produce one large flower. Six of these sunflowers lined up together make a lively arrangement.
Once the flowers have finished blooming and the leaves have begun to wither, I pull them out by the roots and dispose of them. Because the flowers are so large, sunflower stems are about 3cm in diameter. These stems are tough and difficult to cut. Cut stems also wither and do not turn into compost. For this reason, I switched to mini sunflowers this year.
I found these "mini sunflower" seedlings for sale at a florist, so I bought two and planted them in my garden. Small flowers began to bloom around the end of June, and many stems began to sprout from the base, which then bloomed. A total of 20-30 flowers bloom, making for a lively display. They're less than 50cm tall, so they don't get in the way. As September began, fewer new flowers began to bloom.
Ｏｕｒ garden has three "mini sunflowers" rooted in it. They start blooming in early July and continue to bloom until September. Each mini sunflower produces five to ten stems, each bearing several or more flowers. The yellow flowers make them stand out in the garden. These mini sunflowers were not planted as seedlings. Seeds must have flown in from somewhere and germinated in our garden. When I looked online, I found that the "small sunflowers" mentioned above are called "mini sunflowers," and that the "mini sunflowers" mentioned here might be called "konatsu sunflowers."
