草取り
夏の終わりから秋にかけて私の庭仕事といえば、庭にはえた雑草の除去である。雑草の種類は３～５種類あるが、その中で多いのはドクダミ草である。これは薬草の一種であろうが、我が家では迷惑な雑草である。この草をむしった時、いやな匂いを発する。ネットによれば、この葉や茎を乾燥すると、この匂いはなくなるという。このドクダミ草は、陰干して使うと色々な効能があるという。高血圧、動脈硬化の予防効果、あるいは湿疹、かぶれなどの外用薬など。どくだみ茶もある。我が家では厄介な雑草として駆除している。
ドクダミ草は、地下５～１０ｃｍぐらいのところに白い細長い根があり、その根の各所から茎が地上に出てくる仕組みになっているようである。ドクダミ草を除去するには、この地下の根を引っ張り出さなければならない。
次に多いのはムスカリである。これは独立の小さな球根から細長い葉が出る草である。球根だからどのように繁殖して増えるのか分からない。ネットによると、球根から小さい球根が生まれ（分球という）、そこから葉が出て増えていくという。そうであれば、親のムスカリの周りに子供のムスカリが密生するはずである。ムスカリの子供は親の近くに１、２個あるだけである。しかし、ムスカリは適度な距離１０ｃｍぐらい離れて方々に存在する。これらのムスカリの球根はどうやって移動したのか不思議である。ムスカリの繁殖は分球だけでなく、花からの種が飛んで、増えていくのであろうか。
次に多いのが、草の名前は分からないが、ひょろ長い草がある。この草は引き抜くと根が密生しており、抜き取るのに苦労する。私は、振動式の草刈り器を購入して、この草を引き抜いている。これを使うと楽に引き抜くことができる。最初に購入したものは電池が内蔵されて、途中で使えなくなる。その都度充電する必要がある。２台目に購入したのは電池が交換式のもので、予備の交換用の電池を取り換えるとすぐ使える。交換用の電池は、電動ハサミ、電動草刈り機に使用しているもので、１８ボルト、２１ボルトの電池を４個持っている。
このひょろ長い草は、幅１ｃｍ以下の狭い所にも生えるので、草刈り器は使えない。小さくて細いクワで抜くしかない。
このようにして草取りが終わるのは秋の終わりであり、庭は緑がなくなり、土色の景色になる。

Weeding
From the end of summer to autumn, my main gardening task is removing weeds that have grown in my garden. There are about three to five types of weeds, but the most common is Houttuynia cordata. It's said to be a type of medicinal herb, but in our household, it's a troublesome weed. When you pull this weed out, it emits an unpleasant smell. According to the internet, this smell disappears when the leaves and stems are dried. This Houttuynia cordata is said to have various effects when dried in the shade and used. It's said to be effective in preventing high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis, or as an external medicine for eczema and rashes. There's also Houttuynia cordata tea. In our house, we treat it as a troublesome weed and eradicate it.
Houttuynia cordata plants have long, white roots located about 5-10 cm underground, and stems emerge from various points along these roots. To remove Houttuynia cordata, we must pull out these underground roots.
The next most common plant is the muscari. This is a plant with long, slender leaves that grow from a small, independent bulb. Since it's a bulbous plant, I don't understand how it reproduces and multiplies. According to the internet, small bulbs are produced from the main bulb (a process called bulb division), and leaves grow from these, allowing the plant to multiply. If that were the case, there should be a dense cluster of young muscari plants around the parent plant. However, there are only one or two young muscari plants near the parent plant. Instead, muscari plants are found scattered around at a moderate distance of about 10 cm from each other. I wonder how these muscari bulbs moved to these locations. Does muscari reproduce not only through bulb division, but also through seeds from the flowers that are dispersed by the wind?
The next most common type of weed is a tall, slender grass whose name I don't know. When I try to pull this grass out, the roots are densely packed, making it difficult to remove. I bought a vibrating weed puller to remove this grass, and it makes the job much easier. The first one I bought had a built-in battery that would run out of power midway through use, requiring me to recharge it each time. The second one I bought has a replaceable battery, so I can quickly replace it with a spare battery and continue working. I have four spare batteries that I also use for my electric pruning shears and electric weed trimmer; they are 18-volt and 21-volt batteries.
This tall, slender grass grows even in narrow spaces less than 1 cm wide, so a lawnmower cannot be used. The only way to remove it is by pulling it out with a small, narrow hoe.
This process of weeding is only completed by the end of autumn, at which point the garden loses its greenery and becomes a landscape of bare earth.
